A Brooksville woman set aside her fears to rescue a thirsty snake after it got its head stuck in a beer can on the side of the road.
Rosa Fond tells News Channel 8 she was driving on Perimeter Road when she spotted the black racer snake in distress.
“I couldn’t let her die. I know in this area, if someone gets a hold of that, they will probably torture the animal,“ said Fond, who owns Humans and Animals United Rescue.
Fond got out of her vehicle and tried to free the reptile as she recorded video of the rescue on her cell phone and two small dogs ran out of a nearby home to watch.
“I gotta save a snake! Oh God, I don’t know how I’m going to do this!“ Fond is heard saying in the video.
After several minutes of prodding and breaking a nail, Fond was able to free the snake from the can.
“How on earth did I get the courage to do this I have no idea! She even wrapped herself on my arm twice!“ Fond wrote on Facebook. “It was a battle but I saved her. All for the sake of the animals.“
After it was rescued, Fond said the snake, which is known for going after people, sat there for a while and rattled their tail, looking angry. She said she waited a moment to pick up the can, which she kept as a souvenir.
Fond said she’s rescued other animals in the past, including mice, alligators and horses, but she is not a fan of snakes.
“I look at them, I will see them, but I don’t like touching them,“ Fond said.
