Tampa Bay Rays center fielder Kevin Kiermaier returned to the Rays lineup Monday night, leading off in a game against the New York Yankees.

Kiermaier left last Friday’s game against the Miami Marlins after aggravating a lingering foot injury while running the bases.

The discomfort was treated with a cortisone shot on Saturday and Kiermaier tested the foot Monday afternoon.

“Today’s a really good day, so far,” Kiermaier said. “I ran today and had the least amount of pain I’ve had in quite a while.”

The injury happened in early April when a batted ball ricocheted of Kiermaier’s foot.

He was later placed on the disabled list for a different injury, ligament damage in his hand.

Kiermaier does not like wear too much protective gear on his lower body but admits he will be careful with the foot remainder of the season.

“I’m going to try and not even think about it,” Kiermaier said. “Don’t hit any more foul balls off there [foot.] That wouldn’t be good. But I’ll wear a guard over my foot.”
