In a surprising roster move Monday, the Tampa Bay Rays placed All-Star pitcher Blake Snell on the 10-day disabled list.
The move is retroactive to last Friday, so Snell is expected to miss just one start.
Snell has fatigue in his throwing shoulder, an issue that has bothered him for at least a few weeks. An examination on Monday revealed no damage and Snell did not sound concerned about the issue lingering.
“Never had that much of a first half with a work load,” Snell said. “That could lead to it.”
Snell’s impressive 12-5 record heading into baseball’s All-Star break saw him throw a total of 119 innings.
The All-Star Game was his last appearance on a mound. He threw 39 pitches in an inning and two-thirds.
