No decision yet on quarterback, says USF coach Charlie Strong

The USF Bulls are teetering on the edge of practicing and practicing for their first game against Elon University.

Their head coach, Charlie Strong, SAID they scrimmaged for the final time on Wednesday afternoon before they plunge into full preparation mode.

When we asked Strong to put a number on the level of preparedness, he said it is a tough task.

“It is hard to put a number on it because some days, we come out here and we practice very well and we look very good. Some days, we come out here and you would think we were never taught any fundamentals, any techniques, no scheme,” admitted Strong.

Who will lead the team under center? The quarterback question is still a huge question.

The main competitors are Blake Barnett, Brett Kean and Chris Oladokun.

“I have not made a decision yet on the quarterbacks,” Strong told us, adding he sees other positions with question marks rather than names beside them.

Has it been difficult on the quarterbacks? Strong is content with how they have handled it.

“They’ve done a really good job,” he said.

“They respect one another and, when you look at it, each day, one of them is running like this guy could start with the ones and, then, the next rotation, this guy, so they have been getting enough reps and it has been easily distributed so, now, it is about us. We have to go make a decision on what guy it is going to be.”

Finally, with all of the focus directed at the quarterback position, what can we expect from the running backs?

We learned Strong is putting an emphasis on the running game this season.

“I want to run the football because I think, when you are able to run the football, you are being physical and we have to be physical so the running backs that we have, we have a bunch of guys who are sitting there and are good players and we can rotate them,” said Strong.

The first game of the season is a home game on Sept. 1 at 6 p.m.
