TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) - Bruce Arians is the new head coach of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
The Buccaneers confirmed they are signing Arians on Tuesday.
The announcement was made Tuesday, just days after Arians met with Bucs General Manager Jason Licht in Tampa.
Arians succeeds Dirk Koetter, who was fired on Dec. 30 just hours after Tampa Bay lost its last game of the season to the Atlanta Falcons. Koetter led the Bucs for three seasons and ended his tenure with a 19-29 record. The team went 5-11 in 2018.
Arians previously served as the head coach of the Arizona Cardinals. He retired from coaching in 2017 due to health concerns.
It initially appeared that Arians was only interested in coming out of retirement to coach the Cleveland Browns, but he also has ties to Licht. The Bucs GM was Arizona's director of player personnel in 2013, while Arians was coach.
Arians was one of four candidates the Buccaneers brought in to interview for the head coach position.
Kris Richard of the Dallas Cowboys, George Edwards of the Minnesota Vikings and Eric Bieniemy of the Kansas City Chiefs also met with Bucs officials.
“Bruce Arians is one of the NFL’s most well-respected coaches over the past two decades and we are excited to have him leading our team. Throughout this process, we focused on finding the right coach with a proven ability to elevate our players and lead our team forward. Bruce has played a large role in the development and career success of some of our league’s best players and we look forward to seeing him continue that work here with our franchise,” said Buccaneers owner and Co-Chairman Bryan Glazer.
