A postal worker in New Mexico is facing charges after police say he drove drunk while making deliveries and crashed his truck.

Body camera video shows police in Rio Rancho responding to the crash involving 28-year-old Kevin Brown last week.

When officers got to the scene, Brown told them he crashed his marked USPS truck in a yard because he was trying to avoid a rock.

“I lost control of the truck and it went that way,” Brown said. “I went to swerve and avoid the rock.”

Brown told police he was wearing his seatbelt, but neighbors say they saw him fall out of the truck after the crash.

The driver also claimed he didn’t have any alcohol. But police say he refused to take a breath test and had trouble with the field sobriety tests. When they asked him to perform the tests, he asked, “what if I’m dyslexic?”

“What if you’re dyslexic? Dyslexia has nothing to do with this test, I guarantee it,” one officer told him.

Brown also told officers he couldn’t distinguish between his right and left.

“My left and right – I don’t know,” he said.

“You know what’s kind of scary? You’re driving a vehicle around and you don’t know left from right,” the officer responded.

Police tell KRQE they found drugs in the delivery truck. Officers say they also found a suspicious apple juice bottle, which can be seen in the body camera video.

“You smell like vodka and that’s exactly what’s in here,” the officer said.

The postal service is investigating the incident. They told KRQE Brown is not driving one of its trucks.
