LAKE WALES, Fla. (WFLA) – New video sent to News Channel 8 shows a car nearly hit the back of a stopped school bus, as kids are boarding. It happened Wednesday morning on US Highway 27 in Lake Wales.

Instead of stopping, the car pulled into the emergency lane on the right, coming within just feet of hitting a student getting on the bus.

Nora Munoz took the video Wednesday morning as her niece was getting on the bus. “It’s only a matter of time before something happens,” Munoz said.

“The driver almost rammed into the back of the bus, and then he pulled off to the side, as my niece is moving towards the bus. He just kept on going. That’s why I had to honk at him,” she said. “If I wouldn’t have honked, he would have hit her.”

8 On Your Side told you about this dangerous bus stop before. Video captured last month by Munoz showed cars speeding past a stopped school bus, despite the flashing red lights and the stop sign. Polk County deputies have increased patrols and have even handed out citations, but the danger persists.

Polk County School District officials and transportation employees viewed the video. A spokesperson released this statement:

“The Transportation Services department has received a complaint about this bus stop location. A review is underway to evaluate this bus stop location and the road conditions surrounding it. The review will explore what options exist to address the complaint, including whether the bus stop location can be moved. You asked why the bus cannot pull off the road. Our policies and procedures do not permit a school bus to leave the roadway when dropping off students.”
