(WFLA) – A massive fire with explosions ripped through a recycling yard in Salt Lake City, destroying two buildings and forcing the closure of the interstate.

KSL reported that it all started with a few sparks from a worker cutting pallets. The fire swept across the Rios Auto Recycling junkyard Friday.

Two shop buildings, multiple cars, motorhomes, and semi-trailers were destroyed.

Investigators said the explosions were caused by the propane tanks and vehicles in the yard. Strong winds pushed the fire onto a nearby field creating a grass fire. That’s what caused the local authorities to close Interstate 80 in both directions for more than two hours.

One firefighter suffered from heat exhaustion. There are no reports of any other injuries.
