Veterans, students show support for SC teen told not to fly flag at school

News

A York, South Carolina high school has changed its policy after veterans and other members of the community held a protest when they learned a student was told he could not fly his flag on his truck.

Dozens turn out with flags in hand, on their shirts, and flying from their cars and trucks one day after York Comprehensive High School officials told one student that he couldn’t fly flags on his truck for safety reasons.

“Well nothing’s been said to me until yesterday and nobody’s complained about my flag before,” said Peyton Robinson.

Robinson says he wasn’t trying to start a movement, but he’s not upset about what’s happened.

After he was told he could not fly flags on his truck, the teen posted a photo of his truck and flag on his Instagram account, along with the following comment:

“I’ve been told by 2 administrators at my school this morning that I can’t have an American flag on my truck because other people have complained about it. Well let me tell you something, I have every right to fly an American flag. It will not be coming off of my truck. This really p***** me off. I ask that everyone that sees this post that attends York Comprehensive flies an American flag of some sort on whatever they may drive to school tomorrow to prove a point. I will not let this go down without a fight. #america #fightforourright”

Dozens of people turned out to show their support for Robinson. A few dozen people who do not attend the school they say they’re proud of him and the others who showed up in support of the stars and stripes.

“It is our right our basic right to fly that flag for those people to get in that’s boy’s truck and remove it is ridiculous,” said a protester.

“These kids have been flying these flags all year long, if it is a safety issue, safety issue is this right here, we need a stop light for these kids.”

For its part, the school says the rule which forbids students from having the large flags on their vehicles is not written anywhere, they have just always enforced it.

“There’s all sort of things that happen in a school that aren’t necessarily written down you deal with them as they go we’ve been. This wasn’t anything that we’re reacting to it’s just something that we’ve done since this school’s been open,” said a school spokesperson.

Judging from the response of students and the community – it may be something that they will have to revisit.

“Cops, when I go down the road they wave at me, people, people support me,” said Robinson.

The school district says it has no plans to punish any of the kids for supporting this cause.

The York County School District has updated its policy and now allows students to display the American flag on school grounds.

They are still trying to determine the size that they will permit.
