2 dead, 1 in critical condition after crash on U.S. 41 in Lutz

TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — Two men are dead and another is in critical condition after a driver lost control of a vehicle and hit a tree in Lutz Tuesday morning.

The crash happened on U.S. Highway 41 south of County Line Road at about 3:25 a.m.

The Florida Highway Patrol said the driver was speeding and failed to negotiate a curve before they lost control of their vehicle, which went over the median and hit a tree.

The 22-year-old driver from Wesley Chapel and a 24-year-old backseat passenger from Zephyrhills suffered serious injuries and died at the scene.

Another 22-year-old passenger from Tampa was rushed to an area hospital, where he was listed in critical condition.

The crash closed U.S. Highway 41 in both directions at Bellamere Palms Court for several hours. It reopened before 11 a.m.
