NORTH PORT, Fla. (WFLA) Police put the cuffs on a North Port woman who allegedly drove drunk and killed an elderly couple outside of the Braves spring training home last week.
Officials say the woman was speeding so fast, she caused a pile up and even slammed into a light pole.
Samantha King is 20 years old, and police say not only was she drunk above the legal limit, she was not old enough to drink!
Inside the Sarasota county jail, 20-year-old Samantha King appeared solemn as the prosecutor spoke about the crime.
On March 24th, the Atlanta Braves had just completed their inaugural game at CoolToday Park.
Deputies were directing traffic at the intersection of US 41 and West Villages Parkway when police say
King speed through at 70 miles an hour and plowed into multiple vehicles killing 81-year-old George Almeder and his 79-year-old wife Rosalie.
“Her blood alcohol level was significant, this wasn’t just over the limit, she clearly had been drinking heavily,” said NPPD spokesman Josh Taylor.
The elderly couple was on their way to visit their son’s house in north port. They had been married for 60 years.
The family is holding a memorial service this weekend.
“All the pain that was caused because she didn’t think twice before getting behind the wheel of a car,” said son Al Almeder.
Al hopes the public learns a lesson from this horrible tragedy.
“You’ve got friends, you’ve got Uber, you have taxi service, kind of dumb to get behind the wheel of a car when you’ve had too much to drink,” said Almeder.
King faces two felony charges of dui manslaughter. She was booked into the Sarasota county jail on $575,000 bond.
The developer, West Villages, plans to build a traffic light at that intersection in the near future.
King has been booked into the Sarasota County Jail.
She is charged with two counts of DUI manslaughter and five counts of DUI with property damage.
The traffic homicide investigation is ongoing and anyone with information is asked to contact the NPPD Traffic Unit at 941-429-7300.
