WATCH: Nokomis principal sings to students to calm nerves before testing

Sarasota County

A Sarasota County principal had a sweet surprise for students that were nervous about state testing this week.

Students arrived at Laurel Nokomis School on Tuesday morning to find their principal outside ready to put on a performance for them. Principal Raymond Wilson was set up outside the school with an electronic keyboard and microphone.

Florida Standards Assessments testing started Monday and Principal Wilson wanted to help calm his students’ nerves before the tests. As students arrived and headed to class, he sang a rendition of the song “Don’t Worry, Be Happy.”

“Today they take the FSA, our students will be okay,” he sang.

Video taken by Joanna Galanos Karins shows students dancing as they pass by the singing principal. She posted it on Facebook Tuesday with the caption, “Best principal ever!” That video has since been liked, shared and commented on thousands of times.

On Thursday, she posted another video showing Principal Wilson surprising his students with a second performance before another day of testing. The second video features lyrics by the principal letting students know he’s proud of them and believes in them.

Assistant Principal Heather Wasserman joined Principal Wilson in the second video along with a group of students who decided to dance and sing along.
