TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — Authorities blocked off a portion of U.S. Highway 41 in North Port after they discovered a “suspicious item” near an intersection in North Port on Tuesday afternoon.
North Port police said the device turned out to be a World War I anti-ship personnel round, which had never been fired.
Police said someone tried to sell the device at a nearby pawn shop but a worker told them that the item could be dangerous. Then the police were called to the area.

Explosive experts with the police department, the Sarasota Police Department and MacDill Air Force base took possession of the device.
The North Port Police Department closed the northbound lanes of U.S. 41 at Eager Avenue to allow experts to examine the item but the lanes have since reopened.
