Some elementary school children in North Port are undergoing counseling after witnessing a violent brawl between two women at their school bus stop. One woman’s injuries were so severe she had to be airlifted to a hospital.

North Port police say the fight happened around 7:45 a.m. on Tuesday at a school bus stop at the corner of Aero Avenue and Eager Street.

During the fight, a coffee mug was broken. Police say pieces of the mug were then used as a weapon in a slashing manner.

Police and paramedics responded to the scene. One woman was classified a trauma alert because of her injuries and was airlifted to a hospital by Bayflite.  The other woman was taken by ambulance to a nearby hospital.

Police have interviewed other parents who witnessed the altercation.

Dozens of children at the bus stop saw the fight. Some of the students are now receiving counseling at Glenallen Elementary School where they attend. A Connect-Ed message will be going out to parents.

The Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office Victims Assistance Unit is available for any families looking for support. They can be reached at (941) 861-4923.

If anyone feels their child may need to make a statement after witnessing this incident, you can contact Detective Adam Taylor at (941) 429-1586.

Charges are pending the outcome of the investigation.
