SARASOTA COUNTY, Fla. (WFLA) - A man has been charged in connection with the burglary of a Sarasota deputy’s unlocked agency vehicle.
According to the sheriff’s office, the stolen rifle, a 9 mm duty weapon and several other items taken from the deputy’s car were recovered on Thursday.
David Byrd, 18, was taken into custody and faces two counts of grand theft of law enforcement equipment, two counts of dealing in stolen property and a single count of tampering with evidence.
Early Tuesday morning, Deputy Brian Keane learned his unmarked car had been burglarized outside his home in North Port.
Keane is an 18-year veteran and a member of the SWAT team.
Officials say the crooks stole some specialized equipment, a 9 millimeter handgun and a sniper rifle.
The sheriff’s office said Byrd’s arrest does not conclude the investigation, which is active and ongoing, but they are confident they have identified all parties involved in the burglary.
The deputy is still on duty, but will be subject to an internal investigation.
