Newly sworn-in Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis is set to tackle a big campaign promise and make what’s expected to be a major water policy announcement Thursday.

Red tide and toxic algae is still a possible threat to the Tampa Bay area as another newly discovered bloom lingers off the coastline.

DeSantis hasn’t said exactly which issues his announcement will address, but negative impacts of red tide have delivered a big blow to coastal communities and business of the greater Tampa Bay area.

The red tide crisis has been the worst scientists at Mote Marine Laboratory have seen in years.

DeSantis said he understands that the waterways need to be protected and spent weeks on the campaign trail revealing his plans.

“As Governor, I’ll stand up to special interests to clean up our waters and stop the spread of toxic algae,” DeSantis said in a campaign ad.

DeSantis will make his water policy announcement at Mote Marine Laboratory in Sarasota Thursday at 12:45 p.m.

You can watch him make the announcement on WFLA.com and the WFLA Facebook page.
