BRADENTON, Fla. (WFLA) – A man was shot and killed by a deputy after he reportedly implied he had a gun and reached into his pocket.
The incident began Tuesday night as a domestic disturbance call at a gas station in Bradenton.
At 9:20 pm, deputies responded to a domestic disturbance between a man and his wife at a gas station in the 3000 block of Cortez Rd . W.
When deputies arrived, the male suspect, later identified as 38-year-old Corey Mobley, drove away at a high rate of speed.
A short time later Mobley’s vehicle pulled into a residence in the 6300 block of 6th St. W. in Bradenton.
Mobley got out of his vehicle and deputies followed him as he ran through the neighborhood.
A deputy and his K9 partner were able to track him down a short time later.
When they tried to take him into custody, Mobley reportedly told the deputy “I have a gun for you,” and put his hand on his waistband.
The deputy, in fear for his safety, fired two shots at Mobley and the suspect fell to the ground.
A few seconds later, Mobley jumped back up with his hands in his waistband, approached the deputy and repeated the apparent threat.
The deputy fired two more shots and Mobley fell to the ground once again.
Deputies performed life-saving measures on Mobley, but he could not be revived. He was taken to Sarasota Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced deceased.
Although Mobley implied that he had a gun, authorities were unable to recover a weapon at the scene.Officials said there is “no doubt” the deputy followed proper protocol. The deputy will be on routine administrative leave as the investigation continues.
