Winter Haven man fends off would-be porch pirate

Polk County

A man confronted a would-be thief who was caught on camera swiping packages in the Lake Ned area of Winter Haven, the Polk County Sheriff’s Office said in a Facebook post asking for the public’s help in catching the porch pirate.

A video shows a man moving packages from the front porch of a home to the back of the house.

According to deputies, a man named Richard was watching this all go down from his home security camera and walked right up to the man and confronted him.

“We generally advise that you not confront a criminal, but having met Richard, we believe he could have handled the Porch Pirate easily had things turned physical,” the agency said.

According to Richard, the thief explained that he was merely protecting the packages because some kids had tried to steal them and he ran after them and got them back. This was of course disproven by another video, which shows the man open one of the packages with his knife. Richard also said he had been watching the home for a while and saw no kids around.

Now the sheriff’s office is asking for the public’s help in identifying the man in the video. Those with information should call Detective VonLeue at (863) 297-1107. To remain anonymous and be eligible for a CASH REWARD contact Heartland Crime Stoppers at 1-800-226-TIPS (8477).
