VIDEO: Woman confronts man who swiped her cell phone at Winter Haven thrift store

Polk County

Police in Winter Haven are looking for a man who stole a cell from a woman shopping at a local thrift store.

Store surveillance cameras at the Winter Haven Meals on Wheels Thrift Store captured the entire incident.

Video shows the man watching a woman as she shops with a young child, who was distracted.

The man swiped a cell phone from her cart and took off.

“How dare you? You know? Because he obviously was watching this lady and just waited for the right opportunity to squeeze by to make sure he saw what he thought he saw, and then come in and take her cell phone,” Winter Haven Police Spokesperson Jamie Brown told WFLA.

Video shows the woman catch on and run out of the thrift store to confront the brazen thief.

“It appears she took him off the bike. We don’t recommend that but kudos to her. We really don’t recommend that because you don’t know how he’s going to react,” Brown said.

The woman got into an argument with the man but he eventually returned to his bike and rode away with the phone.

“You hate for that to happen. That was her only phone number,” Susan Eldridge, executive director of Meals on Wheels in Winter Haven said. Eldridge said it’s disheartening. “If he needed help there are organizations in the community that can help him versus doing something like that.”
