LAKE WALES, Fla. (WFLA) – Two men were killed in a rollover crash near Lake Wales Tuesday evening, according to the Polk County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies say the crash happened on State Road 60 just before 7:45 p.m. When first responders got to the scene, deputies say they found two men who had been ejected from a pickup truck.
Both of the victims, identified as 27-year-old Billy Burgess and 35-year-old Thomas Snipes III, were pronounced dead at the scene. According to investigators, Burgess was the driver and Snipes was a passenger in the black 2003 Chevrolet pickup truck.
Deputies say the truck was headed west of State Road 60 in the inside lane when the crash happened. According to the sheriff’s office, investigators used evidence and witness statements to determine Burgess lost control of the pickup as he approached a curve in the road.
The truck went through the median and rotated before entering the eastbound lanes of the road and then flipping several times, deputies say.
A spokesperson for the sheriff’s office says neither of the men were wearing a seatbelt and both were thrown from the truck.
The truck hit a utility pole on the south side of the road, breaking it off at the base. Deputies shut down the westbound lanes of State Road 60 for about two hours and the eastbound lanes for about four hours.
