A man suspected of shooting and wounding another man during an alleged love-triangle incident turned himself in Thursday, police said.
The Haines City Police Department said William Kennedy Gilbert, 53, drove to a home in the 1000 block of N. 7th Street and shot Saleem Al-Banna in the stomach. Then he left the home in a black pickup truck.
The shooting was witnessed by friends, who were with Al-Banna at the time.
Police said Al-Banna got into his truck to drove to a friend’s house nearby. The friend called 911 and explained that the men had been involved in a “love triangle” with a woman.
Al-Banna was taken to a hospital, where doctors removed a bullet that had pierced his stomach, small intestine and kidney, police said. His kidney was also removed.
Police said Al-Banna remains in the hospital in serious, but stable condition.
Police said officers visited a number of homes connected to the incident—the place where the shooting occurred; the house where the victim drove to; Gilbert’s home; a relatives’ home, where Gilbert’s truck was parked, and the home of the woman in question.
Police said the woman identified Gilbert as her ex-boyfriend of 10 years and said that he “tends to get jealous when she talks to other people.” The woman said she and the victim are just friends.
On Thursday, Gilbert turned himself into the Polk County Jail to face charges of attempted first-degree murder.
