Lakeland family looking for answers in traffic death

Polk County

LAKELAND, Fla. (WFLA) – Linda Ortiz is waiting for answers. Her daughter, Linel Marie Vega-Ortiz, 38 of Lakeland was killed just after midnight on June 5 as she drove her 2017 Mitsubishi sedan through the intersection of Memorial Boulevard and Lakeshore Drive.

Vega-Ortiz was hit by a Cadillac driven by  Cleon Nathaniel Truedell, 32.

Moments earlier Lakeland police tried to pull over Truedell for a traffic violation.

Police say as officer Jim Simon tried to get the tag number of Truedell’s car, he sped off.

Linda Ortiz says she would like to know what led up to the accident.

“When the police came the first time and tell us that a man crossed the light and hit her, okay we understand that, it could happen, but when they came after and say that the police was chasing this man it’s different,” said Ortiz.

Lakeland Police say they are investigating to make sure all procedures were followed during the initial attempt at the traffic stop.

Ortiz says she just wants to know what led up to her daughter’s death.

“We try to make a picture of everything and right now, I don’t know what to do,” said Ortiz.
