Polk County deputies rescued two men after a small plane crashed into shallow water along Lake Hancock Friday afternoon.
Deputies say the plane went down just after 1:30 p.m. near Smith Lane in unincorporated Bartow. Authorities say the plane is in very shallow water on the edge of Lake Hancock.
The two men have spoken with deputies and said they have back pain. Firefighters are at the scene to check their injuries and take them to a local hospital.
A spokeswoman for the sheriff’s office says the area where the plane crashed is not accessible by land. First responders are using specialty vehicles and a helicopter for the rescue.
The NTSB and FAA will be notified so they can investigate why the plane went down.
