Cancer survivor walking 50 miles to raise money for cancer center

A cancer survivor is spending his Memorial Day walking 50 miles to raise money for a Polk County cancer center.

Rafael Martin of Winter Haven is walking from Lakeland to Orlando on Monday. He set out on his 50-mile trek early in the morning as the sun was coming up.

Martin, a special education teacher at Cypress Creek High School, is currently undergoing treatment for prostate cancer. He’s receiving regular radiation treatments at Lakeland Regional Health.

His goal is to raise money for the Hollis Cancer Center, and raise awareness about the cancer epidemic.

He is constantly battling fatigue but says he’s determined to finish this walk.

“I want to do something to help cancer survivors. I’ve lost friends – my mother died of stomach cancer – and friends have died,” he said. “If this does anything to raise donations for the Lakeland Hollis Cancer Center, if it does anything to help people, it’s the least I can do.”

Martin has set up a GoFundMe account for his walk. You can find the page here.
