A family was displaced from its home following a Saturday morning fire that killed four cats.

The Lakeland Fire Department was called to a fire in the 1000 block of Duncan Ave. at about 9 a.m.

Officials said the home’s two residents had safely evacuated, but four of their six cats died in the fire.

One of the residents was rushed to Lakeland Regional Health to be treated for smoke inhalation.

Investigators suspect the blaze started in a screened-in back porch area, but the cause of the fire remains under investigation.

The home was deemed uninhabitable.
