The Polk County Sheriff’s Office Animal Control section received confirmation on Wednesday that a raccoon has tested positive for rabies in the county for 2018.

A couple from Polk City contacted animal control on Monday after their dog got into a fight with the infected raccoon.

The owner of the dog shot and killed the raccoon.

The dog suffered cuts from the attack.

It had a current rabies vaccination and was placed into a 45-day quarantine at the home.

The raccoon was sent to be tested and the confirmation of rabies was received Wednesday.
