AUBURNDALE, Fla. (WFLA) — Auburndale police detained a teenager for his alleged connection to a deadly shooting that targeted a 17-year-old girl Friday, a release said.

Police said at around 4:45 p.m., officers went to the area of Old Winter Haven Road and Parrot Road after learning of a Chevrolet Impala that crashed into a ditch.

Officers said the driver was an unresponsive 17-year-old girl who had been shot.

According to the preliminary investigation, the victim and three other people — one adult and two minors — were being followed by a 17-year-old boy in a blue Honda Accord.

The release said the victim stopped her car on First Street near Earl Wright Park when the teenage boy drove up to the vehicle and fired several gunshots into the driver’s side, hitting the victim.

The girl then drove off onto Third Street, across US-92 and a vacant field, and into the ditch where she and her passengers were found. No one else was injured.

The teenage boy, who is said to also be 17, was taken into custody.

The victim was hospitalized with life-threatening injuries, according to police.

The investigation is still ongoing. If you have any information, call Detective Harry Anderson at 863-965-5555 or call Heartland Crime Stoppers at 1-800-226-TIPS (8477).
