The Polk County Sheriff’s Office traffic unit is investigating a two vehicle crash involving a semi-truck that killed a driver on Thursday.

The crash occurred at US 98 North and Rockridge Road in Lakeland at 2:45 p.m.

According to the sheriff’s office, a semi-truck belonging to Saddle Creek Corp. was driving north on US 98 when it struck a Nissan Altima that was headed eastbound on Rockridge Road and had just entered the intersection.

The Nissan had a green light and the right-of-way.

The driver of the Nissan was declared dead at the scene of the crash.

He was identified as Charles Kimbrough Jr., 59.

The semi-truck proceeded into a nearby gas station parking lot and flipped on its side.

The driver of the truck, identified as Charles Ervin, 41, of Valdosta, Georgia, was not injured. 

Traffic in both directions of US 98 was heavily impacted for about four hours.
