TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — Several representatives for Florida teacher organizations gathered in Miami Springs support U.S. Rep. Charlie Crist’s gubernatorial campaign Tuesday during a press conference.

Crist’s supporters included the Florida Teacher Association, the Pinellas Classroom Teachers Organization, the Jackson Education Staff Professional Organization, and the United Teachers of Dade.

During the conference, the representatives called out the current state government’s for alleged mismanagement during the teacher shortage and targeting LGBT students.

“I will not dignify their dishonest and hostile comments,” said Andrew Spar, president of the Florida Teacher Organization.

During his speech, Crist also criticized Gov. Ron DeSantis’ administration for targeting these groups. He also called for the banning of assault rifles in Florida in the wake of the Uvalde school shooting.

“With God’s blessing and your help and your votes, we’re gonna make Ron DeSantis a one-term governor,” Crist said.
