Police: Video shows woman abandoning child found in bathroom

News

PHOENIX (WFLA/CNN) – Police in Phoenix are looking for a woman who was caught on surveillance video abandoning a small child.

Surveillance video captured the woman walking into an Arizona Food City Saturday pushing a stroller into the store spending nearly two hours in the bathroom before leaving the store.

The video clearly shows the woman push the stroller through the exit but police say a call came into them a short time later.  “The information came from a caller who was walking to work, happened upon a stroller and they saw a little boy’s leg moving,” Phoenix Police Sgt. Vince Lewis said.

A closer look would reveal a baby, dressed in a black Beatles t-shirt, grey sweat pants, wearing a single sock, the woman with him earlier – nowhere to be found.

“No injuries, nothing else to really to suggest anything else was wrong, it was just concerning that the child was left alone,” Lewis said.

But why the child was abandoned remains a mystery, as the search for the woman intensifies.

“If someone’s at their wit’s end and they don’t know what to do we’ll obviously do everything we can to help,” Phoenix fire dept’s capt. Kenny Overton said.

Overton says it’s never acceptable to abandon a child, especially with safe haven laws in place providing a plethora of options including fire stations where firefighters are on duty, ambulance, hospital, qualified adoption agency, or any church.

In fact, there was a fire station only one point two miles from where the baby was ditched.

“Hopefully they maybe recognize either the clothing of the child or maybe the surveillance video, something might jog memory, somebody out there has an answer to the questions that we all have,” Lewis said.

Police say the little boy is now with the state department of child safety. They’re asking anyone with any information about the child or the woman to call them.
