A woman is dead after a crash involving a Pinellas County deputy who had just finished his shift.

The crash happened early Thursday morning in the area of 66th Street North and 126th Avenue North in unincorporated Pinellas Park. Three vehicles were involved in the crash.

Deputies have identified the woman killed in the crash as 28-year-old Brittney Hunter.

According to a news release from the sheriff’s office, Hunter was headed south in the northbound lanes of 66th Street North around 3 a.m., crossed the intersection of 126th Avenue North and hit an SUV head-on. Sheriff’s office investigators say impairment appears to be a factor.

The SUV, driven by a 74-year-old man, was stopped at a red light when it was hit. Deputies say the impact of the collision pushed the SUV into the patrol car of 32-year-old Deputy Jonathan Ferguson. The SUV then rolled onto its side.

Hunter was rushed to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries. She was later pronounced dead.

The 74-year-old SUV driver and Deputy Ferguson were both taken to the hospital with minor injuries. Both have since been released.
