VIDEO: Dolphin creates mud ring to cleverly catch fish

Pinellas County

This rare aerial footage shows a dolphin encircled mullet fish to cleverly catch them.

Outdoor enthusiast Michael McCarthy with See Through Canoe said this feeding technique, called mud ring feeding, has previously only been documented near the keys 16 years ago.

“I was really psyched about getting it since the behavior has only been documented during a study back in 2001 near Key West and they were not able to get footage that actually showed the fish being trapped in the mud ring,” McCarthy said.

The behavior is usually performed with a pod of dolphins, but as you can see in the video, the technique was also successful for the lone dolphin.

In the video, you can see the dolphin tries to toss one of the fish with his tail, which is usually separate feeding technique.

Experts say when there is more than one dolphin, the others wait outside the ring to catch the fish that jump over it to escape.
