Deputies say a 2-month-old baby girl drowned after her mother lost consciousness while bathing her over the weekend in Pinellas County.

Lealman firefighters were called to a home on Dunfries Street North in unincorporated St. Petersburg on Sunday afternoon for the incident.

According to sheriff’s office detectives, 32-year-old Sureka Sivalingam had filled an infant bathtub with water and placed it inside the family’s tub. Sivalingam then climbed into the empty bathtub and put her 2-month-old daughter, Kavina Navanetharaj, in the baby tub.

After about an hour, another family member went to the bathroom to check on the two and found both the mother and baby unresponsive. Deputies say the baby girl was found submerged in the infant bathtub.

The family member pulled the baby from the water and called 911, then performed CPR until firefighters showed up and took over.

The mother and daughter were taken to St. Petersburg General Hospital, where the baby was later pronounced dead.

Investigators say it appears Sivalingam suffered a medical condition that caused her to lose consciousness while she was giving her daughter a bath. She was treated and released from the hospital.

“I don’t know nothing… I don’t know what happened to me,” said Sivalingam.

She says she got dizzy and doesn’t know what happened after that.

“And then, my sister came home and see us, found out what was going on…. I’ve got like high blood pressure, I don’t know.”

Sivalingam said she has previously had an episode, “nut not like this, you know?”

Authorities are investigating the incident but say the girl’s death appears to be an accident.
