TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — A police officer is recovering in the hospital after he was shot while responding to a domestic disturbance in Pinellas Park Tuesday night.
Police said Officer Jacob Derr, 30, responded to the Circle K on 4900 Ulmerton Road after a woman had locked herself in the bathroom. The woman told police her boyfriend, Calvin Brockington had threatened her.
When Derr went to talk to Brockington, the 24-year-old shot him. The officer was struck in the right bicep and was incapacitated, police said. His injuries were non-life-threatening and he is expected to make a full recovery, according to police.
Police said Brockington shot at Officer KC Gavin, 37, who arrived for backup. The officer was not hurt. She returned fire, but Brockington was not hit.
Police said Brockington carjacked a vehicle and drove at officer Gavin before fleeing the scene. He started heading eastbound on Ulmerton Road. When deputies tried to stop him, a pursuit began. He entered the southbound lanes of Interstate 275 and drove over 10 miles to 22nd Avenue South, where he was stopped and taken into custody.
Police said several charges are pending against him.
