Lethargic manatee with watercraft injury, missing flipper rescued in Clearwater

Pinellas County

CLEARWATER, Fla. (WFLA) – A lethargic manatee that was suffering from a watercraft injury and missing one of its flippers was rescued in Clearwater on Friday.

According to the Clearwater Marine Aquarium, the CMA rescue team was on scene with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conversation Commission, ZooTampa and the City of Clearwater.

The animal is suspected to be an adult female.

A spokeswoman with CMA said male manatees began to surround the injured manatee to form a mating herd.

The rescue team separated the female by net and brought her to shore by a specialized boat rescue.

The City of Clearwater lifted the animal by crane into CMA’s rescue van.

FWC determined that the manatee should be taken to ZooTampa for assessment and rehabilitation.
