PINELLAS COUNTY, Fla. (WFLA) – A 15-year-old boy who was the only survivor in a crash involving a stolen vehicle that killed his brother was arrested with another juvenile for stealing a car and fleeing from deputies on Friday.
According to the sheriff’s office, deputies were patrolling for routine burglary prevention in the area of 298th Avenue North and 67th Street North in unincorporated Clearwater around 2:16 a.m.
A boy was seen fleeing after seeing the marked patrol vehicle.
Deputies say the 15-year-old and another subject, a 17-year-old boy, entered a stolen vehicle and left the area at a high rate of speed, traveling onto US Highway 19 heading south.
The vehicle left Hwy 19 and continued west on Sunset Point Road before coming to a stop at Fulton Avenue and Harbor Drive.
Both boys fled the vehicle on foot and tried to hide behind several homes before running into a wooded area that lines the Pinellas Trail.
Deputies set up a perimeter and with the assistance of the flight and K9 units, the boys were apprehended.
The 15-year-old was charged with grand theft auto, loitering and prowling and aggravated fleeing and eluding. He also had six active juvenile pick-up orders for various charges.
Through the investigation, deputies learned the he was the only survivor of a stolen vehicle that fled from deputies and crashed on Aug. 6, 2017, where his brother and two others were killed.
The 17-year-old was charged with grand theft auto.
Both were on felony probation for grand theft auto and were being monitored by the Habitual Offender Monitoring Enforcement program.
