PINELLAS COUNTY, Fla. (WFLA) – A body was recovered from the waters near the Gandy Bridge after a kayaker was reported missing in the area early Saturday night.

Multiple agencies, including the U.S. Coast Guard and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, began searching for 35-year-old Dominic Johnson who went missing after his vessel capsized around 5:30 p.m.

The kayak was found an hour later with no one on board.

“Shortly afterward, the body of a deceased person was found in the water near that location,” Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Wayne Gross said in a news release, adding that the search for the missing kayaker had been discontinued.

“Our hearts go out to the family and friends of the deceased following this tragic incident,” the FWC said in a statement.

The FWC is investigating.
