ST. PETE, Fla. (WFLA) – A death investigation is underway after St. Petersburg Police recovered a body from Tampa Bay. Police tell 8 on your side the body was discovered in a car.

St. Pete Police told 8 On Your Side’s Christine McLarty who was on scene Tuesday morning that the body is that of a 30-year-old woman.

The family of that woman arrived on the scene around 10:00 am and learned the news of their loved ones’ fate.

St. Pete police said they got a call around 7:00 am Tuesday about a car submerged in the water. But the police could not confirm how long the car had been there.

The car went into the water at the intersection of 62nd Ave NE and Bayou Grande Boulevard NE, not far from Shore Acres Elementary School.

8 On Your Side spoke with a woman who was among the first to spot the car in the bay Tuesday morning. She said this is a dangerous intersection where people speed.

Now she’s worried about her teenage son. “You can see the car sticking out, it was way out, like almost to the channel so it was kind of terrifying having a teenager who was going to be driving soon. We didn’t know if the person had made it out of the car so it was pretty scary,” said Kelly Olson who lives in Shore Acres.

Police say a woman in her 30’s did die. They have not released her name yet say they’re still working to learn how or why her car ended up in the water.
