Aggressive motorcyclist swerves into group of bicyclists on Gulf Blvd, severely injures rider

Pinellas County

Indian Shores police need help identifying a motorcyclist who seriously injured a bicyclist Thursday morning while he was riding with a group of cyclists.

Police said the rider intentionally swerved into the bike lane after harassing the cyclists.

They were going south on Gulf Boulevard, near 196th Avenue, when police said the motorcyclist became irate with them.

“I guess there was an aggressive motorcyclists who swerved over and took me out,” said Dr. Lane Ziegler.

Ziegler spoke to News Channel 8 via Facetime from Bayfront Health where he’s recovering.

He said he doesn’t remember the motorcyclist.

“I don’t remember getting hit. I don’t remember going down. I just remember waking up with the EMS guy putting me into the ambulance,” he said.

Dr. Ziegler was rushed to the hospital as a trauma alert.

“A little bit of bleeding in the brain,” he said.

Indian Shores police released a surveillance photo of the suspected rider.

Harvey Zoller was leading the pack when the motorcyclists aggressively rode up next to him.

“I was in the front and all of a sudden, a cyclist, a motorcyclist, came within inches of my handle bars and just yelling at me and profanities,” said Zoller.

Zoller was able to give detectives a good description of the rider and his motorcycle. It has a red, white and blue flag painted on it.

Dr. Ziegler said it could have been worse.

“Please respect us. As cyclists, we’re trying to obey the law. We’re far over to the side as we can. We’re not impeding traffic. I don’t understand if they have to wait to two seconds to get around us, please,” he said.

Zoller said the motorcyclist was last seen heading east across the Park Boulevard bridge.
