17-year-old Boca Ciega High School student arrested for having loaded gun on campus

GULFPORT, Fla. (WFLA) – A 17-year-old Boca Ciega High School student was arrested on Wednesday for having a loaded gun in his backpack on campus.

According to Gulfport police, a school resource officer acted on a tip from other students that indicated the student may have had drugs.

Police said school administrations pulled the student from class and conducted a search with the SRO.
They found a loaded .40 caliber Glock handgun in the student’s backpack.

The officer seized the firearm and arrested the student. There were no drugs found in his possession.

The student was removed from campus. He is charged with felony possession of a weapon and ammunition on school property. 

Police said there was no indication the student displayed or threatened to use the weapon.

The student said he purchased the weapon from a friend for personal protection.
