DUNEDIN, Fla. (WFLA) — The victim in the Palm Lake Village Apartments has died, according to officials.

It was a quiet Thursday morning in the apartment complex until Maurice Upton heard someone yelling for help.

“It was up in flames and I mean everything was falling around me,” Upton said. “I got to the door and I mean everything was melting and falling everywhere and then there she was.”

Upton said he was compelled to jump into action.

“The only thing I was able to do was grab her by her ankles and pull her out,” he said.

Dunedin Fire Rescue said they were called to 1695 Lakeview Lane in Palm Lake Village Apartments at 9:10 a.m.

Firefighters arrived to find the building engulfed in flames. They said a person was found lying outside of the apartment and was taken to the hospital in serious condition.

Fire officials confirmed her death to News Channel 8 Friday. The Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office later identified her as Patricia Mitchell, 82.

Dunedin Fire Rescue said they have requested the State Fire Marshal investigate the fire. While the cause of the fire is unknown, neighbors said the woman is on oxygen and is a smoker.

The Medical Examiner’s Office is also working to determine the exact cause of death. However, the fire appears accidental, according to officials.
