PASCO COUNTY, FL (WFLA)- Pasco County Sheriff Chris Nocco is warning Port Richey residents about a mail theft that happened at a U.S. Post office. A thief broke into a drive up mail box outside of the Post Office at the Embassy Crossings shopping center at 9602 U.S. 19. The theft happened sometime between 5:00 P.M. On Wednesday at 9:30 A.M. on Thursday.

Sheriff Nocco believes the thief was looking for more than letters. “This is really a warning to our citizens right now, if you have any critical information that was in there, your date of birth, social security numbers be warned right now for the fact there may be criminals that are using that information for bad purposes,” said Nocco. Nocco says normally he warns people not to put letters with checks or other valuable information into their home mailboxes because thieves have been targeting those.

Now he is advising people to take important letters into a post office to avoid theft. Nocco says criminals are adapting and his deputies will too. The U.S. Postal Service is also investigating the crime.
