After three weeks of heartache, a local Air Force veteran has been reunited with his four-legged best friend.
On Monday night, 8 On Your Side’s Melanie Michael spoke with Larry Peteet about his search for his sweet girl Sandy. The heartbroken veteran said he was separated from Sandy after a car crash back on Oct. 16 in Land O’ Lakes.
When the accident happened, first responders asked Peteet if Sandy could stay with neighbors while he recovered in the hospital. When he was released from the hospital, he received the devastating news that his neighbor left his beloved dog with a stranger at a dog park.
After our story aired Monday night, a viewer reached out to Peteet and said he was given the dog in a park a few weeks ago and was told it was abandoned. Since then, he and his family have been taking care of it. He says he contacted Peteet after seeing our story.
The man sent Peteet a picture of the dog via Facebook, but the veteran said he couldn’t quite confirm it was his Sandy from the photo. The man who found her took off work Tuesday morning so he could meet with the veteran at a dog park.
As soon as Peteet saw the dog, he knew.
“Unbelievable. I’ve been crying all morning. Just unbelievable. When I saw her, I called her name and she came running. It’s phenomenal. She’s home,” Peteet told Melanie Michael via phone after the reunion. “You guys did it, it was because of you. I’m gonna start calling you Mother Teresa! You got her home.”
