A gun belonging to a Pasco County sheriff undercover detective is missing. He left it behind after using the restroom at a Burger King on US Highway 19 in New Port Richey.
There is no telling who has the gun. The race is on to find it.
During the busy lunch hour, an undercover detective used the men’s room, removed his gun, but left it behind.
When he returned, the gun was gone.
Neighbors worry who has it.
“That’s just leaving it out there for anybody to get. And then the wrong hands are gonna get it, more bad stuff is gonna happen,” said Angela Bernardini.
Pasco deputies are talking to the man seen in security camera video to see if knows anything about the missing handgun.
“I think anybody knows if they find something like that, that it’s not theirs. If they’re taking it, that is stealing a handgun. They should know that they should report that as soon as possible,” said Kevin Doll from the Pasco County Sheriff’s Office.
Investigators spent hours going over every inch of the Burger King. They checked trash cans and talked to customers in the restaurant.
There is concern the gun could end up in the hands of a criminal.
“That’s not right. Especially around this area. A lot of drug dealers and crack heads around this area,” said Charles Lish.
As for the undercover detective who lost his gun, he could face discipline.
“At this point our main focus is finding this handgun, getting it back into our possession,” said Doll.
Investigators hope whomever has it does the right thing.
“It’s terribly irresponsible. Especially of an officer of the law or something, you know,” said Bernardini.
If you know something about the missing gun, Pasco County deputies would like to hear from you.
