Off-duty Pasco deputies rescue men from gulf

Pasco County

Two off-duty Pasco County deputies went fishing at Artificial Reef #2 in Pasco County, hoping to reel in some big ones. Instead, they ended up rescuing three men stranded after their boat capsized.

Deputy William Gay and Deputy Sean Powers noticed the men and their training kicked in.

“We looked off 150 yards to the west of us and saw something that didn’t look right,” Deputy Gay said.

Once they got closer, they worked to get the men from the water.

The three men, William Garcia and Larry and Jerry Garcia, were clinging to a life jacket and a cooler.

“It was pretty isolated out there,” said Deputy Powers. “We don’t know how long those men had been in the water or what caused their boat to capsize.”

One of the men suffered a head injury.

The deputies, who had only been boating for two weeks, said they were just glad they could be there to help.

“Glad we were at the right place at the right time,” Deputy Powers said.

“I’m a very religious person, so I believe God put me there at the right place at the right time. That’s how I look at it,” Gay added.
