A 91-year-old Hernando County man is facing charges after deputies say he went into a Pasco County church and threatened a pastor with a gun.

Pasco deputies were called to the New Bethel AME Church in Lacoochee for an aggravated assault in progress on Saturday afternoon.

A sheriff’s office report says 91-year-old Cornelius Jones went into the church to confront his ex-girlfriend, who still lives with him, about why she was still there. According to investigators, Jones believes she is involved with the church’s pastor.

The pastor went over to the pair when he heard Jones’ voice inside the church. That’s when deputies say Jones stood up, held a handgun above his head then threatened the pastor with the gun.

The pastor brought Jones’ girlfriend and two other women who were at the church into an office where they called 911.

Jones left the church right before deputies arrived and was later arrested at his home in Hernando County.

According to jail records, he is facing three charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon without an intent to kill.
