TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) – OneBlood announced Thursday it will test all blood donations for the Zika virus.
“OneBlood received an unanticipated announcement from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on July 28th after its operations for the day were already underway, requesting collections to cease in Miami-Dade and Broward counties,” officials with the non-profit said. “The guidance was issued in light of the Florida Department of Health investigating four possible non-travel related cases of the Zika virus.”
OneBlood says it is “working as quickly as possible to comply with the FDA’s request.”
Earlier Thursday it was announced federal authorities want to suspend blood donations in Florida counties investigating four mysterious cases of Zika infection that may be the first spread by mosquitoes on the U.S. mainland.The Associated Press contributed to this report.
