Officials at Stop & Shop supermarkets are investigating how a black widow spider got into a package of grapes sold from one of their Connecticut stores.
On Monday, a Branford women found a black widow in her organic white grapes and proceeded to warn the public on Facebook.
“I just found a Black Widow Spider in my organic grapes! I just bought them at The Branford Stop & Shop this morning and wanted everyone to be on the lookout!”
Our sister station WTNH spoke to store officials, who said they were aware of the situation.
On Tuesday afternoon, Stop & Shop issued the following statement:
“The safety of our customers and associates is very important to us [Stop & Shop]. Stop & Shop and our grape growers take necessary measures to keep spiders out of the grapes that are sold. Despite that effort, it is possible for a spider to get into the bunches as they are a part of the natural, organic environment. We invite all customers who find their produce to not be of quality to come into the store for a refund or exchange.”
Stop & Shop has offered the woman a full refund for her produce.
