Friends and family came together over the weekend to help a dying dog check an item off her bucket list.
Pit bull-lab mix Ella, 5, was a stray who toughed it on the streets. She came into Rescued Ohio when she was pregnant and in need of medical care. She was diagnosed with breast cancer last year after she had been with her foster mom, Brittnie Baker, for just two months. Since then, Baker has been making sure Ella lives life to the fullest.
On Saturday, friends and family gathered for Ella’s birthday party, which doubled as a “Day of Destruction,” featuring pizza and all the toys a dog could handle.
“She is having a blast,” Baker said. “She likes to destroy toys, so we figured we’d give her a day where she could just go ahead and tear up [the toys] and not have to worry about her running all of her toys.”
Ella’s rescuers said she doesn’t have much time left, making this day even more special.
“We’ve had a lot of heartache knowing what her life expectancy is,” said Leslie Walker with Rescued Ohio. “It’s very rewarding to see her so happy rolling in the grass.”
Baker and the volunteers with Rescued Ohio have been working to make sure Ella enjoys the time she has left. They even made a bucket list for her, and the Day of Destruction was one of the activities on the list.
“It just means everything to be able to give her some happiness,” Walker said.
