TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) – Moffitt Cancer Center has teamed up with Tampa Bay area salons to provide cancer prevention and early detection education to women.

It’s called Shop Talk Health Tips For Women, and on Monday members of Moffitt’s staff will teach local stylists how to talk to clients about early screenings and healthy lifestyles. “Healthy client, good business. Not a healthy client, not good business,” Ethnic Hair Care Salon owner Tina Minnifield said.

To her clients, Minnifield is more than a stylist.

“We are doctors, too. We are doctors, ministers, therapists. So we want to make our job easy. So we keep you informed and educated and then my job is easy. I don’t have to fix up a bad head because you were unhealthy and it was murdered,” she said while working on a client.

Cathy Grant is with Moffitt Cancer Center and she believes using salons to educate women about cancer can save lives.

“A lot of times we don’t get screened because we don’t know how valuable early detection can be. There are many cancers and if caught early, it can be lifesaving. So rather than get the information at stage four why not get it at stage one where there is more we can do to help?” Grant said.

Moffitt Cancer Center will start to train stylists and shop owners from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. Monday at Ethnic Hair Care Salon in Brandon.
